Overview

Located at the bustling corner of Market Street and South 6th Street in Philadelphia’s historic Old City, Philly Cheese steak & water ice offers an authentic taste of one of the city’s most beloved culinary traditions. This modest food cart may be small in size, but it holds a significant place in the hearts of locals and tourists alike who seek an authentic Philly experience.

The star of the menu is undoubtedly the Grilled Beef and Onion Sandwich, a classic cheesesteak made with thinly sliced, juicy beef cooked to a tender perfection. The sandwich is served on a soft roll that soaks up the savory juices, and the melted cheese—whether Cheez Whiz, provolone, or American—melds seamlessly with the caramelized onions. This simple combination delivers bold, well-rounded flavors that capture the essence of Philadelphia’s iconic street food.

Complementing this savory delight is their signature water ice, Philadelphia’s unique take on Italian ice. It offers a smooth, creamy texture packed with vibrant fruit flavors—refreshing and perfectly suited for hotter days spent wandering the nearby landmarks like the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. The pairing of the warm, hearty cheesesteak with a cold, sweet water ice creates a satisfying balance that appeals to both locals craving a classic and visitors looking for a true taste of the city.

Service here is generally friendly and respectful. While some visitors have noted occasional delays during busy weekends, the staff’s courteous attitude and the quality of the food make the wait worthwhile. The cart’s convenient location makes it an ideal stop for anyone exploring Old City, providing quick refueling without sacrificing authenticity or flavor.

Designed for a broad audience—from tourists seeking an iconic Philly bite to residents who appreciate a well-crafted cheesesteak—this spot excels in delivering both tradition and satisfaction. It’s not just a meal; it’s a genuine Philadelphia food culture experience, where the history of the city meets the comfort of a handheld classic.

In sum, Philly Cheese steak & water ice stands out as a quintessential destination for those eager to indulge in genuine Philly flavors with a touch of local charm. Whether you come for a quick lunch, a snack between sightseeing, or a nostalgic treat, this small yet mighty cart promises a memorable culinary moment in the heart of Philadelphia.

Great location in my opinion, the man serving is very respectful, seems like a really nice guy. I got a cheesesteak and some water ice and was genuinely impressed. Maybe I was just hungry from walking around all day haha, but the food was really good. I'd come back.

Good but slow. Ordered a cheesesteak for myself and it took about 35 mins on a weekend without a long line. Not sure if I just came on a bad afternoon, but I can’t imagine the wait when there’s a long line.

THE BEST, not one of the best, but THE BEST PHILLY CHEESE STEAK I have ever had. The flavor is perfection, the service is fast, and it's not crazy expensive. It's a food cart here to stay and I highly recommend!

Philadelphia is home to two iconic treats that everyone must try: the Philly cheesesteak and water ice. In Old City Philadelphia, you’ll find these local delights served up just steps from the city’s historic landmarks, making them perfect for refueling while sightseeing. The Philly cheesesteak, with its soft roll, juicy thinly sliced beef, melted cheese (often Cheez Whiz, provolone, or American), and optional fried onions, is simply unforgettable. Pair that with water ice—Philadelphia’s signature take on Italian ice, known for its smooth, creamy texture and bold fruity flavors—and you have a winning combination. These treats are especially popular on hot summer days, offering the ultimate in comfort food and refreshment. There’s just something magical about enjoying these local favorites in the heart of Philly’s history, surrounded by sights like the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. It’s a quintessential Philly experience! This little stand is the best!!

Walked past this place on the way to the Liberty Bell and it smelled fantastic, so I decided to try it and eat here, and I made the right choice. It’s fantastic. You have to get the onions and peppers, as I’m not sure how anyone can eat a cheesesteak any other way? They used banana peppers instead of green peppers like most every other place I’ve been to, and I cannot describe the amazing flavor it had. Definitely worth the price and I will return!
